Course Outline

Chapter  Topics
Preface About me
Atheism/Theism debate: a quest for truth or ego-satisfaction?
  About the book
1. Introduction In search of ultimate answers: metaphysics, religion, and science
       The limits of science
Blind following of scientists is no less hazardous!
Following where reason and evidence lead
A probe into Stephen W. Hawking’s Godless cosmology
            1. What is a law of nature?
            2. Do fixed laws leave any room for human free will and   God’s intervention (miracles) in the universe?
            3. Where do laws come from?
            4. How could the law of gravity necessitate a universe out of nothing?
            5. Is it time to celebrate/mourn a personal God’s death?
2. What is a law of nature?      Prevalent definition in science
Definition of The Grand Design (TGD)
  Governing laws
The term ‘laws of nature/science’ is misleading.
No external laws, but inherent powers of particulars at work
3. Do fixed laws leave any room for free will and miracles?  Scientific determinism and free will
TGD’s view: From laws to scientific determinism
No human being or society can function without a firm belief in free will.
Naturalism and religion on evolution and free will [reductive/non-reductive physicalism]
Ibid.      Rejection or acceptance of free will depends on one’s worldview, not science.
            Divinely-integrated dualism
            Cartesian dualism
Ibid.      Religious determinism
  Miracles
Have regularities in nature rendered God’s intervention in the universe (miracles) impossible?
       Miracles and their purpose
4. Where do laws come from? TGD’s view: Fundamental laws, a consequence of M-theory
  M-theory allowing for 10500 universes ≠ Presence of 10500 universes [many-worlds interpretation]
The law of gravity – a consequence of M-theory?
5. A universe out of nothing? TGD’s view
Spontaneous emergence of the universe out of nothing [quantum fluctuations; virtual particles]
The law of gravity necessitating the formation of matter
Ibid.      Negative and positive energies
Gravity, inflation, and the spontaneous creation of matter [repulsive gravity; free-lunch/zero-energy hypothesis]
Ibid. Quantum vacuum is manifestly not nothing!
Has physics rendered creatio ex nihilo impossible? [Heisenberg’s uncertainty principle]
‘Nothing’, once again, turns out to be something! [pre-existing spacetime and the repulsive-gravity material]
6. Is it time to celebrate/mourn a personal God’s death?      Model-dependent realism
       TGD’s view
Commentary: Model-dependent realism leaves no room for truth or ontological claims.
  Are laws self-explanatory?
       TGD’s view
      Commentary
Ibid. God or the multiverse?
       TGD’s view
      Commentary
Why is there something rather than nothing?
       TGD’s view
      Commentary
It’s the question of potential! [inherent potentials of spacetime and primitive energy]
A desperate measure to get rid of God [levels of explanation; material/formal/efficient/final cause]
Ibid. Does the ‘no boundary condition’ render God unnecessary? [atemporal act of creation]
       TGD’s view
       Commentary
Who created God? [“atheistic” anthropomorphism; self-explanation]
       TGD’s view
       Commentary
Conclusion  Recap
Ibid. Theory of evolution by natural selection (ToE)
What is the theory of evolution?
       How does evolution work?
       Macro/Micro-evolution
Ibid.      Quran’s view, as understood by Ghamidi and Hameed
Ibid.      ToE & TGD’s narrative: a comparison [God and evolution]
Other views in context of theism/atheism debate
Ibid.
Epilogue: God and His Grand Scheme      The Meaning of it All
A petty purpose of a great God?
       Judgement – an objectionable idea?
       Eternal retribution?
Ibid.      An unjust accountability?
If there is a God, why is He hiding from us?
Ibid.      The Problem of Evil
